The Short Answer: 1 to 7 Days for Most Jobs

Window glass replacement in the DMV area moves faster than most homeowners expect. For standard residential window sizes, the process from initial photo estimate to completed installation takes 1 to 7 business days depending on the glass type, whether the size is standard or custom, and your scheduling flexibility. Emergency same-day service is available for urgent situations. Here is the complete breakdown of every stage in the process.

Stage 1: Getting Your Estimate (Same Day)

The fastest way to start is our free photo estimate service — send clear photos of the damaged window from both inside and outside, and we respond with a detailed written quote within 2 hours during business hours. For complex multi-window projects or specialty glass situations, we schedule an on-site assessment where a technician visits your home, measures every window precisely, and evaluates frame condition. On-site assessments can typically be scheduled within 24 to 48 hours of your initial call to (703) 470-7867.

Stage 2: Glass Ordering and Fabrication (1 to 5 Days)

Once you approve the quote, we order your glass immediately. The lead time depends entirely on the glass configuration:

Standard single-pane sizes — Common residential dimensions in standard thicknesses are often available from local glass distributors the same day or next day. These are the fastest jobs in our schedule and can frequently be completed within 24 to 48 hours of estimate approval.

Standard double-pane IGU sizes — Many common IGU configurations are available from inventory or through rapid fabrication at regional glass fabricators. These typically arrive within 2 to 4 business days. If you are upgrading to Low-E glass, most standard Low-E configurations are stocked at the fabrication level and do not add lead time.

Custom sizes and configurations — Non-standard dimensions, specialty glass types (laminated, decorative, patterned, historic restoration glass), and unusual specifications require custom fabrication that typically takes 3 to 7 business days. We specify the correct dimensions at the measurement stage and order immediately upon your approval.

Tempered safety glass — Tempered glass requires heat treatment after cutting to size and cannot be altered after tempering. Most standard tempered sizes are available from inventory or fabricated within 3 to 5 business days. Large or unusual tempered sizes may take up to 7 business days.

Stage 3: Scheduling Installation (Usually Within 1 to 2 Days of Glass Arrival)

We contact you the moment your glass arrives to schedule installation. Most installations are scheduled within 1 to 2 business days of glass arrival. We work around your schedule with morning, afternoon, and weekend appointment availability throughout Washington DC, Northern Virginia (Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Reston, McLean, Herndon, Tysons), and Maryland (Bethesda, Silver Spring, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Annapolis, Frederick).

Stage 4: The Installation Itself (30 Minutes to 3 Hours)

Actual installation time depends on the number of windows and complexity of the work:

Single standard window: 30 to 60 minutes from start to cleanup, including glass removal, frame prep, new glass installation, sealing, and final cleaning.

Multiple windows in a single visit: Each additional window of similar type adds roughly 30 to 45 minutes. A technician handling 4 to 6 windows in a single visit can typically complete the entire project in half a day.

Wood frame re-glazing: Traditional wood frame glazing with compound takes longer than vinyl snap-in work because the compound must be carefully applied, tooled, and cured. Allow 60 to 90 minutes per window. Painting the new glazing compound typically requires a second visit 24 to 48 hours later after the compound has fully cured.

Specialty or large glass: Large patio door glass panels, floor-to-ceiling windows, and specialty installations may require a two-technician team and longer installation time. We advise on this specifically during the estimate phase so you can plan accordingly.

Emergency Service: Same Day When Needed

For broken windows that pose immediate security, weather, or safety risks, Virginia Glass Windows provides emergency service throughout the metro area. We can board up an opening within hours and in many cases install replacement glass same-day for standard sizes we have in inventory. Call (703) 470-7867 for emergency response. Our emergency service page has more details on response times and same-day availability.

Planning Around Lead Time

If you know in advance that you have a window that needs replacement — a foggy IGU, an aging single-pane unit, or a non-urgent crack — it is worth getting your estimate and ordering the glass before the window becomes urgent. Starting the process proactively means your glass arrives and gets installed on your schedule, rather than under the pressure of a sudden failure.

Virginia Glass Windows completes all work with a written warranty and thorough post-installation cleanup. Use our photo estimate tool to start your project today.
