What we still need to quote it

  • A photo of the whole window from inside, plus one of the glazing bead or stop at close range.
  • Whether the sash comes out or the glass has to be set in place.
  • Frame material and condition — vinyl, wood, aluminum-clad, steel — and whether the corners are still square.
  • The overall unit thickness and the sightline, measured at the edge. A 3/4 inch unit does not go into a 1/2 inch pocket.

What actually decides a glass job

People assume the glass is the job. It is not. On a typical residential sealed-unit swap the glass is a small part of the work — the rest is the measure visit, the fabrication order, the return trip, the labor to strip old glazing without damaging the sash, and the disposal. That structure is why a tiny pane and a medium pane are far closer together than the square footage suggests.

Size drives the job non-linearly. Under about 12 square feet one person sets the glass with cup handles. Past that you need two people, past 25 square feet you are into mechanical handling, and past roughly 40 square feet a unit may need a lift. Each of those is a step change, not a gradual increase, so a panel six inches wider can be a materially different job.

Three ways to make the job simpler

  • Bundle the visit. Mobilization is the expensive part. Every additional pane on the same trip is far more efficient than a separate call, and seals fail in cohorts anyway — if one unit on an elevation has gone, check the rest while we are there.
  • Keep the frame. If the sash operates and the frame is sound, replacing the sealed unit gets you current-generation glass performance without touching your trim, siding or interior finish.
  • Only temper where it is required. Tempered glass is genuinely safer, and it is also a no-recut product with a longer lead. Spend it where the code or a real hazard calls for it.

Questions people ask

Because most of the work is the visit, not the glass. A glazier still has to drive out, measure, pull the old glazing, order the piece, come back and set it. The material on a 12 by 16 inch pane is trivial. That is why nearly every shop in the DMV has a job minimum, and why replacing four panes on one visit is far more efficient than four separate calls.
