Door Glass Replacement: what we work on

Each of these is a different assembly with its own hardware, tolerances and code path. Drawings, not stock photos.

Entry door with sidelites and transom, elevationA half-lite entry leaf between two narrow sidelites, under a transom, all glazed with safety glass.

Entry Door Glass

Full-lite, half-lite, and decorative insert panels for steel, fiberglass, and wood entry doors. We match leaded, etched, frosted, beveled, and clear glass patterns for every door brand found in DMV homes. From the classic oval inserts in Fairfax County colonials to the contemporary full-lite panels in newer construction.

Storm door over an entry leaf, elevationA half-lite entry leaf between two narrow sidelites, under a transom, all glazed with safety glass.

Storm Door Glass

Interchangeable glass and screen panels for all major storm door brands including Larson, Andersen, Emco, and ProVia. We replace cracked or broken storm door glass panels and can upgrade the glass thickness for improved impact resistance in wind-prone DMV locations.

Sliding patio door, planOne fixed panel and one operating panel running in a two-track sill, meeting at the interlock stile.

Sliding Patio Door Glass

Large-format tempered and insulated glass panels for sliding patio doors. We replace single-pane tempered panels and insulated glass units in Andersen, Pella, Marvin, JELD-WEN, and all other major brands. Foggy sliding door glass from failed seals is among our most common projects.

French door pair, elevationTwo glazed leaves meeting on an astragal, each with a single lite between stiles and rails.

French Door Glass

Multi-lite and full-lite glass panels for interior and exterior French doors. We fabricate replacement panels with matching muntin profiles, spacer colors, and glass specifications. Both true divided light (glass between panes) and simulated divided light configurations are available.

Entry sidelite, elevationA half-lite entry leaf between two narrow sidelites, under a transom, all glazed with safety glass.

Sidelight Glass

Narrow glass panels flanking entry doors. We match the decorative pattern, glass type, and dimensions of existing sidelights for seamless replacement. For homes where sidelights and the entry door share decorative glass patterns, we replace both together for a cohesive result.

Transom lite over a door head, elevationVision glass above an intermediate rail with a solid bulkhead panel below, in the same aluminium perimeter frame.

Transom Glass

Glass panels above doors and entry systems. Transoms range from simple clear panels to elaborate geometric, leaded, and art glass designs found in historic DMV homes. We source and fabricate transom replacement glass including specialty shapes like arches, ellipses, and fan patterns.

Every hour costs you more

Why you need door glass replacement now

Delaying repair doesn't save money — it multiplies the damage.

01

Broken Door Glass Is a Security Emergency

A front door with broken glass is the most visible security vulnerability on your property. Damaged glass can be easily pushed through or kicked out, and homes with visible damage experience higher break-in attempt rates.

02

Curb Appeal and Property Value Decline

Your front door is the focal point of your home's exterior. Cracked, foggy, or broken glass diminishes the appearance of your entire home. Replacing the glass restores the elevation without the slab, the frame or the hardware being touched.

03

Energy Loss and Comfort Issues

Cracked or seal-failed door glass allows significant air infiltration. In the DMV's hot summers and freezing winters, compromised door glass forces your HVAC to work harder and drives up energy bills.

04

Decorative Glass Damage Affecting Home Character

Many DMV homes feature distinctive decorative door glass — leaded patterns, beveled clusters, etched designs — integral to the home's character. A generic clear replacement changes the entire look. We match nearly any decorative pattern.

Specified before it is ordered

Every door glass replacement job starts with the assembly, not the pane. What the frame is, how the glass is captured, which code applies to that opening — those decide the specification, and the specification decides whether the repair lasts.

Front Door Glass Replacement Options for DMV Homeowners

DMV front door styles range from classic leaded glass sidelights in Georgetown rowhouses to decorative oval inserts in Fairfax County colonials to full-length panels in newer construction. We stock hundreds of decorative patterns and work with artisan fabricators who can recreate period-appropriate designs for historic homes.

Emergency Door Glass Replacement in Washington DC Metro

We carry common door glass insert sizes on our trucks for same-day replacement. For decorative or custom glass requiring fabrication, we install a temporary tempered panel to secure the door immediately and return with the matched glass when ready.

French Door and Sliding Patio Door Glass Replacement

We replace individual glass panels in French doors, sliding patio doors, bi-fold doors, and multi-panel systems, matching glass type, thickness, grid pattern, and tint for a seamless result. For insulated French door glass with grids between the panes, we fabricate replacement IGUs with matching grid profiles and spacer colors. Patio door service also addresses foggy seals and worn track systems.

Sidelight and Transom Glass Replacement

Sidelights and transoms are integral to your entry design. When damaged, we treat the entire entry system as a unit, ensuring replacement glass coordinates with adjacent panels. For homes where multiple elements are damaged, we replace them together for a matched set.

Decorative and Leaded Glass Door Restoration

We work with certified leaded glass restorers who can repair damaged sections or reproduce complete panels from photographs and measurements. For homeowners upgrading a plain door, we offer custom design consultations through our network of glass artists.

Storm Door Glass Replacement

Most brands including Larson, Andersen Emco, JELD-WEN, and ProVia use interchangeable panel assemblies we can replace without swapping the door frame. We stock common sizes for single-visit completion. For discontinued configurations, we fabricate custom panels.

Security Glass Upgrades for Door Glass

Standard tempered door glass can be shattered with a single impact, letting an intruder reach through to the deadbolt. Laminated security glass holds together after impact, preventing the glass from falling out. We offer three tiers: standard laminated (0.030-inch PVB interlayer), enhanced security (0.060-inch interlayer), and polycarbonate-laminated panels that are virtually unbreakable. All available in clear, tinted, frosted, and decorative configurations. Recommended for any door glass within arm's reach of the lock.

Door Glass for Historic DMV Homes

Georgetown Federal-era rowhouses, Capitol Hill Victorian homes, Old Town Alexandria colonials, and Takoma Park bungalows all have period door glass requiring specialized reproduction. We work with certified lead came artists using traditional techniques and source hand-beveled glass matching original bevel angles. For homes in designated historic districts, we provide documentation satisfying preservation review board requirements.

French Door and Sliding Door Glass — Large Panel Expertise

Sliding patio door panels can measure up to 48 inches wide and 80 inches tall, requiring pneumatic suction cups rated for 200 pounds, adjustable glass carts, and installation braces. For French doors, we match grid configurations exactly — true divided lites, simulated divided lites, or grilles between glass. For sliding doors, we upgrade single-pane panels to insulated Low-E units and inspect track, rollers, and weatherstripping during every glass replacement.

Common Questions

Door Glass Replacement FAQ

Yes. In the majority of cases, we replace only the glass insert while keeping your existing door, frame, and hardware completely intact. That preserves the door style, finish and hardware you chose for your home, and it is why an insert can be changed with the leaf still hanging. Our technicians are experienced with every major door brand and construction type found in DMV homes, from steel and fiberglass to wood and aluminum.

The insert, taken apart and turned

A live model of an entry leaf you can swing and orbit, then four plates: the retainer sandwich exploded, the three families of glazing seen through, where the code actually lands on a door, and how to read the mark that tells you what you already have.

The leaf swings inside its frame so the slab thickness and the depth of the insert read — drag to turn the model, or use the arrow keys.

If there genuinely is not one anywhere, the lite was notsupplied as safety glazing, whatever the door itself is made of — and that is worth establishingbefore the replacement is specified.

Four things worth knowing before you call

Two about the code, two about getting the replacement to match what is already there.

Code

No threshold applies to a door

Most of the safety glazing rules have a size test or a height test in them. The one covering glass in a door has neither: any glazing in an operable door panel is a hazardous location full stop, so it is tempered or laminated and it carries a permanent mark. That is IRC R308.4.1 residentially and IBC 2406.4.1 commercially, and it applies to entry doors, French doors, interior doors and closet doors alike.

Measure

Measure the daylight opening, not the glass

The lite you can see is smaller than the piece behind it, because its edges are hidden under the retainer frames. What we need is the daylight opening — the visible hole, corner to corner — plus the leaf thickness and a photograph of the retainer profile. From those three the correct insert size follows; from a measurement of the visible glass alone, it does not.

Match

Obscure glass has a grain and a face

Rolled patterns are textured on one side and run in one direction. Turn a lite ninety degrees, or fit it smooth-side out when the original was smooth-side in, and it will not match the sidelight next to it — the reflections break at the join and the whole entry reads as a repair. We record the direction and the face before anything is ordered.

Choice

Tempered and laminated both satisfy the code

They are not the same thing afterwards. Tempered dices into blunt granules and leaves the opening empty. Laminated cracks but stays in the frame on its interlayer, which matters for a lite within arm's reach of the deadbolt, and brings noise and UV performance with it. Both are safety glazing; the choice between them is about what you want the door to do the day after.

A door is rarely the only lite in the opening

Sidelights and a transom have to agree with the leaf on obscurity, tint, coating and bar width, or the elevation reads as a patch. If more than the door needs work, doing it together is the only way it ends up looking like one assembly.

Send the daylight opening and a photograph of the corner.

The visible hole tells us the size; the corner tells us what the glass already is. Those two settle most of the specification before anyone arrives.
