Preparing Your Home for Window Glass Replacement: A Homeowner's Guide

Clear the Work Area

Move furniture, curtains, blinds, and decorative items at least 3 feet away from each window being serviced. Our technicians will lay down drop cloths, but clearing the area in advance speeds up the process and protects your belongings. For large or heavy furniture, just move items away from the window side — you do not need to rearrange the entire room.

Provide Access

Ensure our technician can reach every window scheduled for replacement from both inside and outside. Unlock gates, clear walkways, and let us know about any dogs, alarm systems, or locked areas that might affect access. For windows above the first floor that require ladder access, clear the area below the window of patio furniture, planters, and other items.

Plan for Ventilation

During replacement, the window opening will be exposed to outdoor air for 15 to 30 minutes per window. In summer, adjust your thermostat to account for the temporary opening. In winter, replacement is still possible but expect the room to cool briefly while the window is open. Close interior doors to minimize the temperature impact on the rest of your home.

Protect Nearby Surfaces

While we take every precaution, glass replacement involves working with glazing compounds, sealants, and cleaning solutions. If you have especially delicate surfaces — marble windowsills, custom paint, silk window treatments — remove or cover them before the appointment. We carry drop cloths for floor protection, but covering surfaces you are particularly concerned about gives you extra peace of mind.

What Our Technician Handles

We bring all materials, tools, and protective equipment. We protect your floors, remove old glass safely, install new glass, clean up thoroughly, and vacuum for fragments before leaving. You do not need to provide anything beyond access to the windows and a parking spot for our service vehicle.

After Installation

New glass can be cleaned immediately with standard glass cleaner. If your replacement includes an insulated glass unit (IGU), small water pockets may be visible during the first few days as the sealant cures — these disappear naturally and are completely normal. Avoid placing heavy objects against newly glazed windows for 48 hours while glazing compound sets.
