ADA clear width

Pair of aluminium doors at 36" gives about 34.0 in clear, measured from the face of the open leaf to the opposite stop. ADA 404.2.3 and IBC 1010.1.1 both need 32 in minimum, 48 in maximum for a single leaf. On a pair, one leaf has to give the 32 in on its own — you cannot add the two together.

Opening force

ADA 404.2.9 caps interior hinged doors at 5 lbf. Exterior doors are left to the local authority, and ICC A117.1 applies 8.5 lbf. A closer sized for a street-facing infill elevation at 30 psf normally lands between 8 and 14 lbf.

Fix: Add an ANSI A156.19 low-energy operator. A closer weak enough to hit 5 lbf will not close the door against stack pressure, and you end up wedging it — which is the failure mode inspectors actually see.

Egress hardware and swing

60 occupants, Group B or M. Over 50 occupants IBC 1010.1.2.1 requires the door to swing in the direction of egress travel — this one swings out. Panic hardware is not triggered at this occupant load, though most tenants want it anyway for a single-action exit.

Egress capacity

Both leaves give 68.0 in of clear egress width. At 0.15 in per occupant (IBC 1005.3.2, sprinklered) that serves 453 people.

Mullion deflection

Street-facing infill at 30 psf design pressure. The vertical beside the door spans 110" and carries 54 3/8" of tributary width, deflecting 1.37 in. The limit for a member supporting glass is L/175 — 0.63 in here.

Fix: Go to a deeper mullion, add a steel or aluminium reinforcing insert inside the section, or add a horizontal intermediate to shorten the span. A storefront that deflects seals out its glazing gaskets and leaks within two winters.

Hardware and frame compatibility

Medium, 3-1/2 in stile. Takes a mortise lock, a rim device and a concealed rod. The closer, lock and glazing pocket all suit this frame. Slab on grade: Core and box out for a floor closer without drama.

Safety glazing (IBC 2406)

All door glazing is a hazardous location under IBC 2406.4.1 regardless of size. Sidelites within a 24 in arc of the door edge with a bottom edge under 60 in above the floor fall under 2406.4.2. Everything here is fully tempered or laminated with a permanent etched bug, and any panel over 9 sq ft on a walking surface qualifies twice over.

Threshold, sill and set

Threshold, sweep and weatherstrip are in the package. ADA 404.2.5 caps the change in level at 1/2 in and anything over 1/4 in has to be bevelled at 1:2. Heaviest single piece is 132 lb — 2-person set with four-cup carriers, glass dolly.

Resolve these before the shop drawings go out

Aluminium doors are machined at the shop. A device that does not fit the stile, a leaf that misses 32 in clear, or a floor closer over post-tensioned tendons all have to be caught here, because none of them have a field fix.

Design pressure: 30 psf

Based on ASCE 7 components and cladding for Risk Category II at the ultimate wind speeds mapped across Northern Virginia, DC and suburban Maryland, reduced to allowable stress. A wind study or a specific building height changes it, and on a tower base it goes up.

Sizes come from the dimensions you entered using standard storefront allowances — half an inch up off the sill, the framing face taken out of each lite, and daylight opening measured to the glass stop. It is a planning schedule, not a fabrication order. We survey the finished opening and produce shop drawings for approval before anything is machined.

An entrance is a hardware problem wearing a glass costume

Nobody calls about the glass. They call because the door drags, or it will not latch in January, or the closer has been leaking oil down the leaf since spring. Almost every one of those is a hardware or frame decision made years earlier by somebody who was looking at a rendering.

The stile decides the hardware

A narrow stile door gives you the most glass and the cleanest look, and it will not take a rim panic device or a standard mortise lock — there is nothing behind the face to machine into. A medium stile at 3-1/2 inches takes almost everything. A wide stile at 5 inches takes everything and is what you want on a door that gets 2,000 cycles a day. Choose the stile after the hardware schedule, not before it, because aluminium doors are machined at the shop and there is no field remedy.

Depth carries wind, face width is cosmetic

Storefront comes in 4-1/2, 6 and 7-1/2 inch depths with the same visible 1-3/4 or 2 inch face. The depth is what resists wind, and deflection goes with the fourth power of the span. Double the height of an opening and you need roughly sixteen times the stiffness. That is why a 10 foot entrance on a street elevation usually needs a 6 inch section or a steel reinforcing insert, and why a storefront that was fine at 8 feet leaks at 12. A frame that deflects past its limit works the glazing gaskets loose and the water follows within two winters.

Occupant load, not aesthetics, sets the door

Fifty occupants is the number that changes everything. Above it the door has to swing in the direction of egress travel, and in an assembly or educational occupancy it has to carry panic hardware. Egress capacity is straight arithmetic — clear width divided by 0.2 inches per occupant, or 0.15 in a sprinklered building — and no detailing choice gets around it. Get the occupant load from the architect before anyone picks a door.

Why there is no price here

Because the entrance is rarely the expensive part. What moves the number is whether the existing opening is square, whether the slab can be cored, whether the sidewalk needs a permit to work from, and whether the building can be left open overnight or needs a temporary closure and a guard while the frame is out. We would rather hand you an exact specification and quote it honestly than publish a figure we have to walk back after the survey.

  • Clear width. A 36 inch leaf is the smallest that reliably makes 32 inches clear. On a pair, one leaf has to do it alone.
  • Opening force. A closer strong enough for a windy elevation will not meet 5 lbf. A low-energy operator is the honest fix.
  • Floor closers. Three inches of recess in the slab. Not over post-tensioned tendons, not without a scan.
  • Revolving doors. Never an accessible route. A swing door within 10 feet is the code, not a courtesy.

Questions people ask

Because the door is rarely what drives the number. What drives it is the opening you already have — whether the existing frame is square, whether the slab can be cored for a floor closer, whether the sidewalk is in the public right of way and needs a permit to work from, and whether the building can be left open overnight or needs a temporary closure while the frame is out.
